Saluda Garden Club

Is this a cat, or what?  A flower that looks like a cat?  Or a cat that looks like a flower?  In fact, whatever it is, the location is just a foot or two from a bird feeder.  So, it must be a cat disguised as a flower - on the prowl, just waiting to jump in for the kill!  Located in the garden of one of our members, it's the result of a rather nondescript "cat" that had no home other than an available flowerpot.  Add a little color here and there.  Voila!  All feathered friends, BEWARE!

Just in time to get updated on how to give our birds the best during the winter, Priscilla Palmer from Wild Birds Unlimited in Hendersonville, will be our next speaker.  The meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 22, at 10 a.m., in the library.  Come and get the handout you missed from the last meeting and enjoy our company.

Tip of the month:  To control weeds organically, especially in small areas that border on the real plants, spread several layers of newspaper over the weeds  for at least two weeks or as long as needed.  Weight down with rocks to deter winds or animals from shifting the papers.

Happy Gardening

Mom's Being Proud

I just started to subscribe to your Saluda Lifestyles.  What a treat to have my son and his friends on your front page!  What a great shot!

The by-line could imply that these children might be part of the summer growth. Just want you to know (it likely does not matter to anyone but the moms of these kids) all of this kids in your photo are year-round Saluda residents.  For some reason you caught a photo of a great group of friends who are all highly talented, gifted and honors students.  We hear so much in the news about kids who are violent, buried in video games, obese, angry with attitudes, or not doing well in schools.  But what your photographer captured is a handful of kids who are just a great bunch of kids and each is very proud to call Saluda their hometown.

As the parents of these kids will all agree, "It takes a village to raise a child." Maybe I should not speak for all these kids' parents, but I will.   I'm sure, like me, they all are very grateful to the "village" of Saluda for helping raise our kids.  In this group you will find artists, actors, musicians and vocalists; all of these kids are superb athletes, all of these kids take their academics very seriously. All of them are a joy to spend time with, and beam with a zeal for life.  Each of them reflects Saluda's hometown values where ever they go.  In just a few short years each will embark on their life's adventures and they will always carry a piece of Saluda in their hearts on their journey.

So, many thanks for the fun photo, and for your part in our "village"!

DansKinetics

In June, four FREE demonstration classes of DansKinetics were offered at the Saluda Senior Center.  For those of you who were not able to attend these classes, more FREE demo classes will be offered in August, so please bring your bodies and join in the fun.  Jo is offering these demo classes to introduce a new exercise class to the community and hopes there is enough interest so that she will be able to teach classes this fall. Due to the nature of these classes, a minimum of 6 people are needed for a class.

What is DansKinetics?  DansKinetics is an exercise class--and More!  It is moving to all types of music.  Classes begin with slow, simple stretching and warm up to guided and free dance movements.  Classes then end gently with a meditation to music.  No experience is necessary. All ages and body types are welcome. Classes are at least an hour long.

So mark your calendars. Dates and times include:

August 20, 27: Mondays nights at 5:30 pm

August 2, 23, 30: Thursday morning at 10:00 am

Jo Rytter teaches the DansKinetics class and is a certified Kripalu DansKinetics Instructor.  The Kripalu Center (www.kripalu.org) is a world renowned institute located in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts and is dedicated to the advancement of yoga and health.

What a Great Place to Live!

Saluda: It remains the best place I ever lived. If you ask me, there is no place on earth just like Saluda. From the very day I first saw the town, I knew it was a special place in this big world, and a place to be treasured. Over the years, my belief in that has only gotten stronger. We have so many wonderful people in this town: I've written about some of them, and been touched by every one of them.

A couple of days ago, a 200 year-old oak tree fell and took out part of my house, the entire back deck, and more. Miracle of miracles, no one was hurt or killed. My son was in his room upstairs when it happened, and part of his room disappeared into thin air: and I shiver to think what could have transpired. Instead of crying or asking 'why me', I just felt a deep gratitude that we are all ok. Houses can be fixed, but lives can't be replaced.

My immediate worry was finding someone to come tackle the huge old tree. To make a long story short, Phil Baumberger of Saluda Tree Service showed up in no time, probably losing out on his supper hour because of my call. Not once did he say: I'm too busy, or I'll come in the morning. Within minutes of getting here, he was up on the roof, putting up a tarp to keep rain out of the second story. Ropes and belts, he was taking his own life into peril on my steep roof! On into the dark, he was sawing limbs that were hitting the house, and doing his best to get a start on the mighty project. Somehow, I felt deeply comforted with his reasurring presence on the job. He was back in the morning, equipment and helper Randy in tow. The tree will take days of hard labor to clean up: it's a momental task. The house will take much longer. However, I look around Saluda, and I see so many good, decent people here that make this town what it is. People with kind hearts. People who come running when there's a crisis. They don't run away, they are right there through the hardest times. This is what makes those people like family. Phil, and those with his kind of spirit, are all around this town. Saluda is the magical and special place it is, because of people like them.

Speaking of Saluda, I'd like to invite everyone in Saluda to come visit to the Upstairs Artspace in Tryon. The gallery is easy to find, on 49 South Trade Street beside the Tryon Theater. The gallery is a non-profit organization, and it needs community support--both financially and otherwise, to ensure another 30 years in existence. As an artist and an art-lover, I value the gallery immensely: it has been in existence almost 30 years in different locations--and now has a beautiful restored building to showcase contemporary and cutting edge art. I now manage the gallery, and would love to see ALL of you coming in. The hours are 11 to 5, Tuesday through Saturday, and I'd be delighted to see you and give you the grand tour. The Upstairs is such a valuable resource for this area: and it belongs to us all. Please come!

August 19 Beverly Pickard leads a painting workshop. Participants will use the supplies provided to paint with oil pastels. Basics of color, value and composition will be discussed and practiced. There will be handouts.

August 26 Gloria Ross will demonstrate and teach participants how to create art with stone clay. This workshop is appropriate for and can be enjoyed by all ages.

Joe AdamsPaul KoenenSaluda Fine Arts presents "The Music of Art," an exhibit of oil paintings by artist Jean Hough. The public is invited to an opening reception on Saturday, August, 4, from 6 - 7:30 at 46 E. Main St. , Saluda, NC. The show will be on display through August 17.

The reception features Hough's art as well as live music and artistic food prepared by Chef David's Catering.

Hough paints in oils "because of their richness and depth of color." Her medley of art for "The Music of Art" includes a variety of images and feelings - the thrilling still life of beautifully painted objects, landscapes that generate silent energy, portraits that invite a concert of emotions.

Hough describes herself as a self-taught artist, who drew since childhood and took all the art classes available in high school. She was a biology teacher and describes her learning and teaching experience as related to her early skill at visualization.

Enjoy the music of art without hearing it or describing it in words - just feel its energy.
