The new construction at the Senior Center is rapidly drawing to a close. Don Mintz Builders are doing a superb job and all construction is right on schedule. If the hammering is drawing your curiosity, stop by and gauge the progress for yourself. The new covered front porch is giving the Center a refreshing new look along with expanded possibilities for use. If you have any ideas about programs or events that would incorporate the use of the new porch, please let us know.
Would you be interested in Movie Matinee night or Classic Movie night at the Senior Center complete with popcorn and cold drink? There is an information and participation sheet at the Center Organization for a Movie program is in the works, so if you would like to see Movie Matinee become a reality, please give us your input. We believe that the program would occur once a month on a Fri. night or a Sat. afternoon. The public's suggestions are encouraged.
The Saluda Senior Center is associated with the Polk County Council on Aging. During the month of May the COA will be sponsoring two events. The first is the Polk County Resource Fair held at Harmon Field on May 13 from 10-2. Booths will be setup for health, financial and communication vendors. The second event is May 20, called "Scam Jam". This event will deal with fraud and theft related to seniors, but we be beneficial to all ages. "Scam Jam" will be from 10-2 at Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Tryon. Lunch will be offered at both events.

| Saluda Garden Club |
|
|
IT TAKES A VILLAGE...to have a great garden club! And we're on our way! We welcomed the following new members this month: Martha Anderson, Nora Parks Anderson, Marilyn Prudhomme and Anita Severn. Next month our program will be a return of John Vining from the Polk County Extension Center. John is a return speaker from last year when he gave us a great education on the best perennials for this area. This year his topic is native shrubs and plants. The village is always invited, so don't hesitate to come even if you are not a member. We will be meeting again at the library at 10 a.m. on May 19.
And now some new words of wisdom and perhaps some old ones too on poison ivy hopefully from the tried and the true!
1. Tecnu is a topical, commercial product that is very helpful with poison ivy.
2. No Tecnu? Try cutting a lemon in half and rubbing the cut side on the affected area. Another suggested remedy is to rub affected area with leaves of a walnut tree.
3. Don't forget that PI can result from inhaling smoke where PI is being burned.
4. Spray antiperspirant (not deodorant) containing aluminum chlorhydrate on the skin to control the itching.
5. PI can remain active for up to 5 years on any surface or area it has contacted.
6. Some victims recommend washing the area, especially if it is done within 5 minutes and with Octagon soap. Some recommend not washing the area. If you do wash, be sure to use cold water rather than hot as hot opens up the pores and allows the oil to penetrate further. In any event, it is always best to apply ointments or treatments from what is determined to be the most distant area of contamination to the most central in order not to spread the oil further. Others report that washing with Octagon prior to contact will protect you as well.
7. Poison ivy and kudzu can be mistaken for one another.
8. Remember oil on your hands can be transferred to your clothing (or anything else you touch) which will then be a new source of contamination.
9. Using a weed eater to remove PI will result in spraying your legs, especially bad if you have open sores or wounds
10. 500 people could itch from the amount of oil that could fit on the head of a pin. One billionth of a gram of oil is sufficient to result in a rash.
If none of the above is remembered or effective, perhaps the following words will provide some relief:
!!#!!##!!!!!##
See you next month !#!!!#

Saluda Community Land Trust Extends Their Thanks |
|
|
The Saluda Community Land Trust (SCLT-"skillet") held its first annual Membership Meeting on Wednesday, April 16th at the Saluda Senior Center. The event was well attended with over 75 community members present. Our sincere appreciation is extended to the Marjorie M. and Lawrence R. Bradley Endowment Fund of Polk County and the Polk County Community Fund for supporting SCLT's initiatives in our first year.
Through the Bradley grant we were able to send four board members to Southeast Land Trust Conference in Montreat where valuable information was learned and networking with other area land trusts will benefit the SCLT's goals of preserving the rural character of Saluda. At the annual membership meeting, again supported by the Bradley grant, we shared the accomplishments of the SCLT during its first year, which include establishing the Robinson Community Garden, collaborating with the City of Tryon and the Henderson Historic Society to create a greenway that will link Old Mountain Page Cemetery and the Pearson Falls glen, and increasing our membership to over 60 members.
SCLT is sponsoring the Robinson Community Garden and spaces are currently available for lease. The garden is located on Henderson Street and has full sun and rich soil-perfect for growing your own vegetables and flowers! Cost is $15 for members, $25 for those who are not members of SCLT.
If you are interested in leasing a space in the Community Garden or would like more information about the Saluda Community Land Trust, please call 828-749-3900 or 828-749-4661. We are always eager to welcome new members!
Again our sincere thanks are extended to the Polk County Community Fund and the Bradley Endowment Fund of Polk County for their valuable support of the Saluda Community Land Trust.

Litter Sweep on Hwy 176 |
|
In an effort to beautify the heavily littered East and West entrances to Saluda, a disappointingly small group of Saluda Business Association members showed up on Sunday, April 27.
Though we were only able to clean Rt. 176 from the Orchard Inn to Mountain Vista, special thanks go to the Magnificent Seven: Jim Hall, Deb Phillips, Kyle and Dylan, Wendy and Dale McIntyre and Ben Iobst. Thanks also to Debbie Hahn for making a solo pick-up before the bags were collected.
Whether conscious or not, visitors must surely experience some impression of Saluda before they even get here. Especially if the last copule of miles of their drive is marred by four or five hundred beer cans and bottles, styrofoam containers, plastic bags, 6-packs, etc. Please consider contributing some energy toward improving those impressions.
It's not too late to do your own section of the road! Supplies (bags, gloves etc) can be obtained at Salamander located at the Depot Station on Main Street.

| Coon Dog Day Festival Opens Poster Art Contest to Area Artists |
|
If you have ever been to Saluda's Coon Dog Festival you probably brought home two things: great memories and one of their posters. Local Saluda artists have been producing these sometimes artistic - sometimes campy posters for over 30 years and it has become a highly sought after collectors item.

Artwork will be judged by a committee comprised Saluda Community Library officers, artists, and Saluda residents.
The winning artwork will serve as the commemorative poster for the festival and will be used in festival marketing and advertising. The artist will get a copy of the poster, a t-shirt, and will be provided a free 10'x10' booth space at the Coon Dog Day Festival so that they can display and sell artwork. The winning entry will be announced by June 12, 2008.
Proceeds from the poster and t-shirts with the same design will go to benefit the Saluda Community Library. The competition will be juried by artists and residents of Saluda and will be judged on how well the design represents the town and the festival.

Celebrate Mother's Day
Tour de Falls at DuPont Forest |
|
On Mother's Day weekend, the Friends of DuPont Forest will again sponsor the Tour de Falls, a 12 mile tour by shuttle bus to four of DuPont Forest's most spectacular sites: Triple Falls, High Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Lake Julia. The Tour will take place on Saturday, May 10 and Sunday, May 11. Easy-to-enter shuttles will leave from the Tour de Falls parking area from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day This weekend has been planned to provide families and those who cannot hike the distance required a chance to see the beauty of the forest, some of its spring wildflowers, as well as some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Southeast. Three of the sites have shelters with picnic tables and benches. Visitors are encouraged to bring their cameras, picnic lunches, to take short hikes, or just enjoy the beauty of the falls and lake. The waterfalls and lake provide beautiful backdrops for family or scenic photographs. FODF will have volunteer members on each shuttle and at the four stops to assist where needed and to answer questions. At Lake Julia, the last stop before returning to the parking lot, refreshments will be served in the rustic lodge overlooking the lake.
DuPont Forest is located in both Henderson and Transylvania counties. The parking area for the tour is located adjacent to the Buck Forest entrance on Staton/DuPont Road. No advance reservations are required. A $10 per person donation is requested. The Tour generally takes about 2 hours, depending on how long participants choose to spend at each stop. Participants will also have the chance to see several FODF-sponsored projects, including a staircase to Triple Falls, new shelters and picnic tables at High and Triple Falls, and a new path and viewing area at Bridal Veil Falls. "This has become a very popular event," stated Gloria Clouse, President of the Friends of DuPont Forest. "We have many repeat visitors, including some from other states who schedule their visits to the area based on the dates of the Tour de Falls."
Friends of DuPont Forest is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the preservation and improvement of the 10,400 acres of DuPont State Forest. For more information contact the FODF at 828/692-2929 or 828/884-2006, or visit the FODF website, www.dupontforest.com. That website has directions to the Buck Forest parking area.

I was in the family room with my wife recently. She suddenly asked, "Why are you staring at me?"
I said, "I am not staring at you."
She said I most certainly was, but I told her I was just looking ahead...not staring. It's just something old guys do.
She wanted to know what I was thinking. And when I told her I wasn't thinking anything, she refused to believe it.
"You must have something on your mind," she countered. "What are you thinking?"
"I have nothing in my head. Nothing! It's empty. The neurologist even told me so when I went for a test. He said there was nothing in my head," I told her.
"He meant you didn't have any disease in your brain," she said.
"No. He said I had nothing in my head and that if he turned on a flashlight in one ear, the light would come out the other side. It's empty. Guys don't sit around and think all the time as women do. We just sit and stare. My grandfather used to sit on the front porch out in the country and just star ahead until the next meal was ready. Maybe four cars would come by all day long. And when one came by, he would say: There goes another one."
I told her there were a couple of old men who sit on benches outside of Ward's in Saluda. They just stare ahead. They don't talk to one another. They come to town to sit and stare. That's what old men do. It's more fun than a woman could ever imagine.

Renovation, Education, and Salutations |
|
Driving into Saluda from I-26, motorists are greeted by renovations to at least two buildings. And those motorists looking closely are also greeted by one smiling black bear.
Don Mintz Builders is renovating the Saluda Mountain Crafts building and needed to cut a tree but regretted having to do so. Looking for something good in everything, the company turned to art and education. They found David Wells of Bat Cave Bears and commissioned him to demonstrate his chain saw art to Ginger Rackley's fourth grade class of Saluda School.
The students watched intensely as Mr. Wells created the black bear from the cut tree. Mr. Wells held the students' attention as he worked and would periodically stop to explain his plan of action.
Don Mintz Builders cleared the tree from the rooftop, the students learned about chain saw art, and we all are greeted by the smiling bear on Ozone.
