Greetings!
Forty-three years ago in Saluda, to mark the end of
the raccoon hunting season, the town had a picnic.
Today, Coon Dog Day celebrates a breed of dog most
famous for its distinctive howling at the foot of a
tree. Attracting thousands, activities include a
firehouse breakfast, 5K Race, a Main Street parade,
crafts, art, food, live music, and square dancing in the
street. AKC dog judging is held at the school yard and
there is still a nighttime coon hunt contest - not for
raccoon pelts, but instead where raccoon treeing skills
are tested.

Saluda Mountain Jamboree will be celebrating
"Coon Dog Day" on Saturday, July 8 with the band
"Country Sounds" supplying the music for the
dance. On this special occasion, there will be
plenty of the traditional mountain music, square
dancing and clogging. Bob Whitaker, owner of the
Jamboree, will be the caller for the square
dances. Bob provided the music and square dances
every summer for over 20 years in the Saluda
school gymnasium. Those dances are what inspired
the building of the Saluda Mountain Jamboree.
Although, the music and the type of dancing has
changed, it is always good to celebrate with
traditional mountain music and square dancing on
Coon Dog Day. This will be a lot of fun and bring
back memories. The music will be 8 - 11 pm rain or
shine and the building is climate controlled for
everyone's comfort. Call 828-749-3676 or visit the
web site by clicking on the link provided in Quick
Links.
Green River BBQ will entertain patrons from 1-4
with the Caribbean Cowboys.

teaching communication and communicating one’s
purpose through art. Her own work is filled with
images of the human figure, a subject she has
explored for much of her career. Her respect for
every living being and for the earth itself is
evidenced by her use of low impact materials and
her reverence for the unseen, the spiritual. She

Reminders of Saluda's Past |
|
Historian Charlene Pace shared memories of
Saluda with a crowd who gathered at the Saluda
Senior Center on June 24. Pictured between John
Morgan and Elena Robson, Charlene closed her
presentation by reminding everyone that Saluda is
a blessed spot of God's creation. She said,
"there's no other place like Saluda...it's a place
where time stands still." "Saluda has seen many
changes in its 125 years...like the Native
Americans and the first settlers, people have made
a choice to live here because they love it here."
"They come back to find a slower pace of life, a
place to retire or retreat from the world."
Saluda will celebrate its 125th birthday with
cake and ice cream at McCreery Park on August 5
from 1-3.

New at Wildflour Bakery Known for its
natural and no-preservative breads, pastries, and
desserts, the Wildflour is now serving “healthy”
Italian-style pizza on Friday nights. A simple,
thin-crust pizza topped with a rich red tomato
sauce, olive oil and a touch of mozzarella cheese
could help protect you against cancer.
A study out of Milan, Italy claims that eating
pizza regularly can reduce the risk of developing
esophageal cancer by 59%, colon cancer by 26%, and
mouth cancer by 34%.
The secret is in the tomato sauce. Lycopene, an
antioxidant chemical naturally found in tomatoes,
is thought to offer some level of cancer
protection. But commercial, fast-food American
versions are loaded with extra fat, salt and
preservatives. Italian- style pizzas have less
than 50% crust and the rest is made up of 23%
tomato sauce, 23% mozzarella cheese, and 4% olive
oil.
Buoni periodi, buon alimento & buono
salute! (Good times, good food, and good health!)
For more information contact the Wildflour at

The Orchard Inn is celebrating its 25th
anniversay this year. The Thompson's are planning
a celebration event in September.
